The wonderful summer season is finally here, but as the season wears on and the days get warmer and warmer, we may begin to wonder what it was that we actually missed so much!
Whenever the days get a little too warm for comfort, we find ourselves reaching for that air conditioning unit remote control.
During these hot summer days, the last thing that you need is a malfunctioning air conditioning unit. In order to prevent this from happening, there are a few things that you should do as a part of a regular maintenance routine so that your air conditioner will always be up and running and run to the best of its ability to keep your indoor temperatures comfortable.
Do a Test Run
It advisable to do a test runs of the unit very early in the season. This allows you to know how well the unit is running or if its running any at all.
You will be able then to identify any major problems with the unit.
Change the Filters
If the filters are dirty or clogged, the unit will not function properly as it is difficult for air to pass through the vents therefore the cooling process will be inefficient.
Filters are easy to change and are readily available at most hardware stores at an affordable price.
Clean the Outdoor Unit
The air conditioner’s condenser unit is located on the exterior of the building. It is usually a metal box that houses a large fan and a system of coils. As it is outdoors, it is likely to accumulate debris like leaves, grass and loose dirt in and around the unit. You should ensure that all debris around the unit is removed so that there is free flow of air around it. It is also very important that the condenser coils are cleaned as the dirt and debris will reduce airflow, thus reducing the cooling ability of the unit. You can use a hose to wash the coils.
Clean the Drain Line
The function of the drain line, a part of the condensation pump system is to remove moisture from the room. Unfortunately, the drain line is a prime location for the growth of harmful bacteria and even algae. The line should be flushed at least once per year with a bacterial solution for air conditioners or you may use bleach as it is just as effective.
Clean the Interior Unit & Open Supply Vents
You should clean the exterior surfaces of unit inside of the room. A mild solution to remove dirt build-up is all that you will need for the job. You should also ensure that the supply vents are opened to the maximum capacity. Having followed the maintenance guidelines, your unit will be performing at its best. Therefore if the vents are not open or open wide enough for the supply to get into the room, it will not feel as cool as it should and it may even damage the evaporator coil.
